How It Works
Over the course of the program, Cub Scouts visit six different nature centers.

At each hike, participants will:
Hike the featured nature trail(s)
Visit the nature center and explore its exhibits
Learn about local plants, animals, and ecosystems
Enjoy time outdoors with fellow Scouts and families

The Six Hikes
Our program includes hikes at:
Crabtree Nature Center (Barrington)
River Trail Nature Center (Northbrook)
Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center (Willow Springs)
Sand Ridge Nature Center (South Holland)
Pilcher Park Nature Center (Joliet)
Trailside Museum (River Forest)

Earn the “Turtleshell” Patch
Each completed hike earns participants an individual trail patch. After completing all six hikes, Scouts earn a special seventh “turtleshell” patch that completes the full emblem—a great addition to any Scout brag vest or patch blanket.

The Six Essentials
Curiosity and a sense of adventure!

The Six Essentials
While Scouts BSA use ten essentials, Cub Scouts typically prepare for hikes and campouts using the Cub Scout Six Essentials.  Every Scout should pack these items in a small daypack to ensure safety and comfort:

Filled Water Bottle: Stay hydrated. (Consider a hydration pack or an extra bottle for longer treks).
First-Aid Kit: Include adhesive bandages, antibiotic ointment, and moleskin for blisters.
Whistle: An emergency tool for alerting leaders or getting help if lost (not a toy).
Flashlight (or Headlamp): Essential for evening activities or if a hike takes longer than expected. Check the batteries beforehand.
Sun Protection: Protect your skin and eyes with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
Trail Food: High-energy, easy-to-eat snacks like trail mix, granola bars, or dried fruit.
